Council Election
The Sutherland Shire Council Election will be held on Saturday, 8 September 2012.
Three Candidates from each of the five Wards of The Sutherland Shire Council Local Government Area will be voted in to become Councillors. The fifteen Councillors then select one of their number to become Mayor.
For the next four years, these fifteen people will make decisions affecting 220,000 residents, 133,000 workers and a $1.1 billion asset base.

Making Your Vote Count
You may vote in one of two ways:
EITHER
Place the number “1” in the square above the group of candidates for whom you wish to vote. If you wish to vote for additional candidates, place consecutive numbers beginning with the number “2” in the squares above the additional groups of candidates in order of your preferences for them.
OR
Place the numbers “1” and “2” in the squares next to 2 candidates in order of your preferences for them. If you wish to vote for any more candidates, place consecutive numbers starting with “3” in the squares next to those candidates in order of your preferences for them.
Compulsory Voting
Voting in Local Government Elections is compulsory.
Absentee Voting
Voting is not available outside the Ward for which you are on the electoral roll. However, all Wards voting (Ward A, Ward B, Ward C, Ward D and Ward E) is available at thePrincipal Polling Placeat the Sutherland Entertainment Centre,Eton Street, Sutherland.
Polling hours are 8am to 6pm on election day only.
There will also be available polling booths on the boundaries of wards which will operate as Dual Ward Booths.

Declared Institutions
The Election Manager has appointed the following Declared Institutions for the purposes of polling in connection with the election to be held on Saturday, 8 September 2012.
Candidate Information
The Division of Local Government has prepared a publication “Becoming a Councillor” which gives an overview of local Government in NSW and outlines what a Councillor’s role is, what support is available for councillors and how to nominate as a candidate for local government election. Further information is also available from the Division of Local Government.
All local government candidates have obligations under the Election Funding, Expenditure and Disclosures Act 1981 (the Act). More information can be found at the Election Funding Authority website.
Registration of How to Vote Material
Electoral material, including how-to-vote brochures, being distributed on election day must have been registered with the Returning Officer by 5pm Friday 31 August 2012. Posters are not required to be registered.
All electoral material (advertisements, how-to-vote brochures, handbills, pamphlets, posters or notices) used during the election period, 30 July to 6pm Saturday 8 September 2012, must include the name and full address of the person authorising the printing of the material and the name of the printer and the full address at which it was printed.
It is an offence to print, publish or distribute electoral material which misleads electors.
Non-residential Rolls
Claims for non-residential rolls closed at 6pm, Monday 30 July 2012.
Residential Roll
All electors enrolled on the Commonwealth/State electoral roll residing in the Sutherland Shire Council area will be included on the roll for the election.

Enrolment forms are also available from any Australia Post office.
Voting in Local Government (council) elections is COMPULSORY for all electors included on the residential roll.

An Electoral Enrolment Form must be lodged with the Australian Electoral Commission.
